One of the most important things to consider when steaming a hot dog bun is getting the time right, and not allowing the bun to toast or capture too much steam when preparing it for a meal.
It’s a bit tricky to get everything right, but we’ll help you get there.
There isn’t a single method used to steam hot dog buns. You can take different approaches, and some of them even change depending on the type of equipment you use.
For example, each microwave has its own different temperature standards, so the time you need to fully steam the bun varies depending on your own equipment. Let’s first break down each method before going on with specifics, though.

Method 1: Using A Hot Dog Steamer

Prepare a hot dog steamer at an ideal heat level. If your boiler allows you to manually set a level of heat, make sure it isn’t too hot. Otherwise, you might end up burning the bun after placing it.
Place the bun inside the steamer and don’t move it manually once it’s in. Allow the steamer to work its magic by itself without interfering.
Ideally, the bun should be done in around 20 minutes. If your steamer only has room for a single bun, you’ll need to repeat the process each time you want to eat a hot dog.
Most modern steamers allow two or three hot dogs to bee cooked at once, so be sure to get the best out of your product.
Method 2: Microwave Steaming
Soak a small piece of paper in water and use it to sprinkle the bun. Make sure the bun isn’t entirely covered in water, just cover 1/4th of it.
This is done to maximize the steaming effect inside the microwave, so be sure that the bun is not frozen before you start this process.
If it’s frozen, pre-heat it in the oven for a couple of minutes to make it lose rigidness.
Once you’re done, wrap the rest of the bun inside the moistened paper. Make sure the bun is entirely wrapped with the moistened paper before you move forward.
You can then heat it with any type of heat source, but we recommend putting it inside am microwave for 10 to 15 seconds.
The microwave will not melt the paper nor damage it if you only leave it there for a few seconds, so using a microwave is also one of the best ways to quickly steam the bun without having to resort to using an oven.
Method 3: Double Boiler
Place two boilers, one on top of each other, in a regular kitchen stove and heat them. The bottom boiler must be filled with water before you place in on top of the stovetop, which will allow the buns to properly heat once you put them inside.
Put all the buns you want steamed on the top part of the double boiler. Make sure you have access to anything able to cover the boiler. Ideally, you’d want to use the lid which it should have.
Set an alarm to ring after two minutes. That’s all the time this method needs to properly steam the buns. Once the timer goes off, turn off the stovetop and check to see if the buns are ready.
If they aren’t, turn the stovetop on once more and let the buns steam for one additional minute. Do not let them heat too much or it’ll hinder their taste.
