Zippo lighters have become the most emblematic lighters in the world. Many people want to have them, even if they aren’t smokers or if they don’t really have much use for a lighter themselves.
They’ve become part of a pop culture that transcends borders and nationalities – and the quality and durability of this lighters plays a huge part in that.
Nevertheless, they don’t have an unlimited supply of lighter fluid. If you constantly use your Zippo, you might run out of fluid sooner rather than later.
The manufacturer has made sure that the refilling process is rather straightforward, and we’ll be guiding you through each step you need to follow if you want to keep using your lighter for a long time.

Go to a general store and purchase high-quality lighter fluid. Try to avoid filling a Zippo with low quality products as they could damage the otherwise very resistant and everlasting mechanism. High-quality fluid helps preserve the lighter for a long time.
Turn the product upside down and release the lower part to allow the inside unit to come out of the lighter. If you turn this unit around, you’ll notice that there’s a packing material exactly where the fuel chamber is located.
Keep a small piece of metal nearby in case you have trouble detaching the pad – most Zippo’s have it very secured.
Fill the packing with as much lighter fluid as you can. The trick with this step is not to overfill the lighter with too much fluid. If you notice that the lighter fluid starts to change color, stop filling the unit at once. If it doesn’t change color, stop filling it once it reaches the top of the package. Don’t let it drip out of the unit.
If some of the fluid has dripped out of the unit, wipe the outside clean before putting it back inside the lighter. The fluid is highly combustive – leaving the excess fluid untouched could be extremely dangerous.
Put the unit inside the case, making sure that it’s facing the right way. Always keep the lighter with the flammable part looking upwards, never downwards. When the lighter is not in use, you’ll want to keep the fluid as far away from the combustive mechanism as you can.
Try the lighter out to make sure you’ve successfully completed the process. If you flick the flint wheel and no flame comes out, you might need to add some fuel or make sure that the unit was properly placed inside the lighter.
Zippo lighters are extremely easy to refill. The system is also made to last for a long time, thanks to the company’s standards of high quality.
Apart from knowing how to refill a lighter with lighter fluid, be sure to keep it in pristine condition by caring for it on a regular basis.
And… remember to close the lid once you’re done refilling it!
