Things You Must Know Before Buying a Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaner
While having a pet around is great, pet hair will not only make your house untidy; it can be a health hazard, especially to the allergic people. As such, you need to be concerned about the best way to get rid of pet hair from your home, if you have a pet.
One of the best ways to get rid of this hair today is a vacuum cleaner for pet hair. However, not all the vacuum cleaners for pet hair are great at what they are supposed to do.
This being the case, there are several things that you need to consider while shopping for the best pet hair vacuum cleaner. In order to buy the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair today, here are some of the main aspects of a vacuum cleaner that you need to consider:
1. The Layout and Flooring in your Home
The kind for layout and type of flooring in your home will definitely influence your choice of the right vacuum cleaner. To buy a unit that is the best fit for your home, here are some of the considerations that you need to make:
Area Rugs and Carpets
Depending on the type of pet you have in your home, you may have a difficult time getting the fur from your rugs and carpets. In this regard, you will need a vacuum cleaner that has a rotating brush and a comparatively powerful suction to clean fur from rugs and carpets. However, vacuums with rotating brushes can have a damaging effect on hardwood floors.
Therefore, it is advisable to opt for a model that allows you to adjust the height. As such, you will get improved versatility from your unit; hence make it easier for you to clean various surfaces of your home, including carpets and rugs.
Tile and Hardwood Floors
Basically, various vacuum models are specifically designed for various surfaces. It is important for you to buy a unit that is best suited for the type of floor in your home. If you have a tile or hardwood flooring in your home, you should consider buying a vacuum cleaner that has a great suction. Otherwise, you will end up blowing the fur about the floor, rather than sacking it into the vacuum.
Additionally, be sure to purchase a model which allows you to turn off the rotating brush. If you leave the rotating brush on, you run a higher risk of scratching your hardwood floors. This is obviously a major issue. Remember, however, that using a vacuum on hardwood floors is excellent because it allows you to get the hair out of every little crack.
Do you have a stair case in your home? You should as well factor this aspect while shopping for the best unit. In such a case, the weight of the unit is going to be a key consideration. Therefore, you need to opt for a model that is considerably light-weight in such a case.
Again, you should also consider the attachments provided for your preferred pet hair vacuum. A vacuum that comes with a smaller brush head attachment would be a great choice, in this regard.
If you have pets in your home, you should try as much as you can to keep them off the furniture. However, a considerable number of pet owners today love cuddling their pets. As such, keeping pet fur off the furniture can be a little more challenging for such pet owners.
To clean pet hair off your furniture, you will need a vacuum with an attachment that is specifically designed for this purpose.
If you have laminate flooring in your home, you should consider purchasing a dry mop in addition to your vacuum. Dry mops allow you to clean the laminate with ease, with no fear of scratching.
However, if a dry mop simply isn’t in your budget, or if you aren’t satisfied with the cleaning it does, purchase a vacuum without a rotating brush. Another option would be to purchase a vacuum cleaner which can turn off it’s rotating brush. Either of these options should help take care of the dog hair on your laminate flooring.
2. The Right Type of Vacuum Cleaner
With so many types of pet fur vacuum cleaners to choose from today, it can be very overwhelming to choose the right one for your home. Since buying these units require a sizable investment of your hard earned money, you need to ensure that you choose the right type.
To help you make the right choice, here are some of the main pet hair vacuum cleaner types today:
Canister Pet Fur Vacuum Cleaners
Canister vacuum cleaners for pet fur are renowned for their versatility; they may be used on carpet as well as on hardwood flooring. Basically, these units feature a slim hose-like part that is attached to a comparatively small portion that is used to store the collected dirt.
This type of vacuum cleaners is rather quiet in operation and easy to navigate on various surfaces, such as stairways.
While these vacuums have some of the best features to offer, such as HEPA filters, they are relatively expensive and heavier. As such, they are hard to operate around corners and underneath furniture.
Upright Vacuums for Pet Fur
As the name suggests, you do not have to bend much while operating this type of pet hair vacuum cleaners. With regards to versatility, these are often ideal for use on bare floors and carpets (including wooden and tiled floors). Some upright vacuum cleaners come with attachments for cleaning pet fur from furniture as well.
Handheld Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaners
While these vacuum cleaners do not have the strongest suction, they are best suited for cleaning smaller spots. For instance, such cleaners may be used to clean pet fur that has balled up in a corner in your house.
The ease of use of these vacuums is further enhanced by the fact that they do not need to be plugged in. Additionally, this is one of the most affordable pet fur vacuum cleaner types today.
Robot Vacuum Cleaners
These are mostly programmed to work from a charging dock, where they are supposed to return once they are done cleaning. While these vacuum cleaners are meant to do the cleaning work for you, they can be somewhat difficult to navigate around your home.
The good thing about robot vacuum cleaners is that they can be timed to pick up pet hair. However, the cheaper robot pet hair vacuum cleaners are only suited for use in a single room.
Stick Vacuum Cleaners
If you are working on a tight budget, this is one vacuum cleaner type to consider. Most of the stick vacuum cleaners in the market today offer a considerable number of features. These cleaners are also very light, hence easier to navigate around the house.
While the various vacuum cleaner types are suited for various applications, you should focus mainly on the canister and upright pet hair vacuum cleaner models.
3. Your Budget
Just as is the case with any home appliance today, the cost is a major consideration when shopping for the right vacuum cleaner for pet fur in your home today. However, you should not buy a vacuum cleaner simply because it is cheap.
In most cases, the cheaper models are not always the best choice. Instead, you need to ensure that you get the best value for your money when shopping for a pet hair vacuum cleaner for your home.
As a guide, here is the general price range for the main vacuum cleaner types today:
- Handheld Models – Between $17 and $199
- Upright Models – Between 49 and $679
- Robot Models – Between $89 and $599
- Stick Models – Between $29 and $349
- Canister Models – Between $59 and $899
As you can see, you can get a vacuum cleaner for your pet fur, regardless of the budget you are working. However, it is not advisable to simply opt for the cheap models.
4. Tips for Removing Pet Hair from Carpet
There are several extra steps you can take to remove pet hair fully from the carpeted areas of your home. The first recommendation is to vacuum in multiple directions. For instance, vacuum the entire area one direction, then change directions. If this doesn’t work, try a third and fourth direction until most of the hair has been removed.
You can also go over the carpet with some sort of straight rubber edge or a brush before you even vacuum. This allows the dog hair to be pulled out of the carpet before you use the vacuum. This can be preferably in instances when the dog hair is so thick in the carpet that the vacuum simply cannot remove it all.
An additional tip for using your vacuum on carpet is to check the rotating brush regularly. If your dog hair is long, such as from an Australian Shepherd or a Golden Retriver, the hair will often wrap around the rotating brush. This prevents other hair from being pulled out of the carpet, as the brush can no longer do its job.
5. How to Clean the Vacuum
So, you’ve been using your vacuum for a few months and now you notice it isn’t working as well as it did originally. Time to clean out your vacuum!
First, unplug your vacuum
This is an important first step. As you are cleaning your vacuum, you could cause major damage to the vacuum or yourself if you do not unplug the vacuum.
Then, remove the bag or canister
If the vacuum has a bag, empty the bag. If the bag is disposable, remove it and replace it. If the bag is permanent, replace the bag after wiping down the inside with a slightly damp paper towel. Make sure the bag is dry before reinstalling it on your vacuum.
Next, clean the filter
Most vacuums will have a filter on them. Typically, you simply run the filter under water and then allow it to dry in order to clean the filter. Occasionally, you need to replace the filter on your vacuum. Make sure you refer to the owner’s manual for this step, as each vacuum is different.
Make sure the hose is unobstructed
You can shine a light through the hose or you can run a stretched out hanger wire wrapped in a cloth through the hose. Any other firm, straight object will allow you to check the hose as well. If your hose is obstructed, try to remove the object. Remember, if the hose is obstructed, your vacuum is not getting the appropriate suction.
Sanitize the hose
Once your hose has been unobstructed, we recommend you dip the cloth in a mixture of vinegar and water and sanitize the inside of the hose. As dust and grime builds up in your vacuum hose, the hose becomes less effective and is more likely to merely spray dirt around on your floor. This will allow your vacuum to remove your dog hair more efficiently. Do not use the vacuum until your hose has dried completely.
Clean the beater brush
Your last step is one we have already briefly discussed. Turn your vacuum over and check the beater brush. If the brush is wrapped in hair, you will want to cut all of the dog hair away from it. If the beater brush is relatively clean, then you will want to run the same vinegar mixture over the beater brush.
Once again, we recommend you do not use the vacuum until the beater brush is completely dry.
6. What to do if Your Pet is Scared of the Vacuum?
If your pet is scared of the vacuum, one option is to offer them a “safe place” when you do vacuum. For instance, maybe you crate them while you vacuum and do not come near their crate. On the other hand, you could put them in a separate room of the house which you do not vacuum every time.
Another strategy is to teach your pet to like the vacuum coming out and being used. You can do this by keeping treats in your pocket while you vacuum. Make these high interest treats, like pieces of meat or cheese which your pet does not normally get.
Then, as you vacuum, throw the treats between your pet and the vacuum. Over time, your pet will associate the vacuum with treats and will not be nearly as scared. If your pet destroys things when they are afraid, it is incredibly important to keep your pet from becoming scared of the vacuum.
Our Final Review
Whether you are allergic to pet fur or not, you have to clean it from your house to prevent it from accumulating. The best way to get rid of this fur is using the right vacuum cleaner.
With so many makes and models to choose from today, buying the right unit can be a daunting task, especially for the first timers.
Hopefully, these considerations above will help you make the right decision.
